the sacred lotus or oriental lotus is a sacred flower in oriental religions (Buddhism, Brahmanism) and the national flower of India. It is an aquatic plant native to tropical Asia, with its perennial spongy rhizome stem, thick, branched tuber-bearing fixed in the bottom of the pond. The rounded leaves are up to 50 cm in diameter, flowers are white and light pink. The sacred lotus is cultivated for over 2000 years for its rhizomes, seeds and flowers and stems are all edible. The main producer is China.
recent studies have confirmed that rhizomes are rich in fiber, vitamin C, potassium, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, copper and manganese and very poor in saturated fatty acid. It also contains an alkaloid : the nuciferine.
the sacred lotus is an important herb in traditional Chinese medicine. All parts of the plant are used. The rhizome extract has anti-diabetic and anti-obesity properties.
