Aloe vera is an aloe specy grown since ancient times in the Mediterranean region and North Africa. Aloe vera has been adopted in the traditional medicines of many hot regions of the world, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa first, then India, China and Asia mainly after Xth century. Aloe vera is a succulent plant (it stores water in its leaves) that grows on arid soils in colonies because of its ability to produce suckers. Aloe vera gel is formed by the mucilaginous parenchyma of the central region of the leaf, it has a viscous and transparent appearance is odorless and slightly bitter. The Aloe vera exudate is contained in the pericyclic cells (leaf cuticle). Currently, the aloe gel comes mainly in the cosmetic composition or beverage.
water represents 98% of the leaf weight, dry matter consists of 60% polysaccharides. The aloe vera exudate contains 15 to 40% of hydroxy-anthracene derivatives, aloin very large majority, a laxative and irritant properties. The aloe vera gel is very rich in water and contains no specific compounds. It contains fatty acids, sterols, acid-phenols, alcohols, organic acid, it does not contain the anthracene derivative.
